What to Pack for Isla Mujeres

The best thing about packing for Isla Mujeres? You can keep it casual! Most days, I’m in shorts and a summer top, or a swimsuit and cover-up. You’ll see people dressed up for dinner, but island style is relaxed.

One packing tip: leave the high heels at home. Between uneven sidewalks, cobblestones and the occasional surprise hole in the pavement, your feet will thank you. Cute sandals or wedges? Absolutely.

  • 3–4 swimsuits (you’ll probably live in them)
  • A couple of pairs of shorts
  • 3–4 lightweight tops
  • A couple of sundresses, including one for a nicer dinner
  • A casual evening outfit for the guys — shorts and a nice shirt work just fine
  • Comfortable walking sandals
  • Flip-flops or water-friendly sandals
  • A sun hat or ball cap
  • Hair ties — island breezes have their own agenda!

Guys: Pack much the same, swapping dresses for a few extra shorts and shirts. Long pants usually aren’t necessary for a typical island vacation, though you may want a pair for a particular restaurant or occasion.

  • Sunscreen — bring your favorite brand if you have one; you can buy it on the island, too
  • Sunglasses (bring a backup pair if you have them)
  • Minimal makeup and your usual toiletries
  • Contact lenses, glasses and any prescription medications
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A small beach bag

Before you zip up that suitcase, double-check:

  • Passport and travel documents
  • Credit/debit cards and some pesos
  • Phone and charger
  • Travel insurance details
  • Any medications or personal essentials you rely on

I find it easy to travel with a carry-on and a smaller bag or backpack. Choose clothes you can mix and match, and save room for souvenirs! If you’re flying carry-on only, remember that airline rules limit the size of liquids you can bring through security.
Check with your hotel or rental before packing bulky extras like beach towels or a hair dryer. They may already be provided.

Have a bit of extra space in your suitcase? Consider bringing useful donations for local children, such as school supplies, clothing in good condition or small games. Check with a local organization about what’s needed before you pack.

Mapchick tip: Isla Mujeres is a real community, not just a vacation backdrop. Thoughtful, useful donations are better than bringing things that may not be needed. Contact us if you need suggestions
