Uxmal With full tummys and a rental car that makes funny noises, (did I mention that? Perry thinks it has something to do with the brakes,.. oh great!!) we decide to go for it, Uxmal here we come! Just outside of Merida, we stop for gas. Perry asks the attendant how far to Uxmal? He says 21/2 hours. That's not quite the information we got earlier, from here it should be about an hour. Hmmmm..who do we believe? My intuition says the manager at Club Med :) Well, we drive and drive, and I have the GPS on to make sure we're going the right direction. The highway gets narrower because the jungle growth is coming out over the pavement, we can't see any sign of civilaization at all and I'm really hoping we don't get lost! I can see the headlines now "Map Family Disappears in Yucatan!" Also, since I didn't expect we would actually make it this far, I have made no arrangements for a hotel once we're there, in fact, I don't even know if there are any! We finally see the sign to turn to Uxmal.....relief!, we made it!! The terrain really changes from here, it's more like drivng through the mountains, it's really pretty. Then we see it....a huge ancient Mayan building peeking out of the trees in the distance, it's really an awesome site...we're here :) The first hotel we come to is Hacienda Uxmal, it looks nice, so I ask about a room, yes, they have one and the price? 730 pesos. Not bad considering the beautiful room we get and we just walk across the street to the ruins. This is the door to our room and our little porch area and chairs
Door to the bathroom, I know, why take a picture of the bathroom door? but, it was so pretty!
View of pool from our veranda
Uxmal by night How lucky can we get?! We arrive about an hour before the night show, be sure to get to this early if you go, the good seating is very limited. Since we're here on Christmas, the admission is free. We go ahead and rent the translator headphones like at Chichen-Itza for $2.50 US. each The Uxmal nightshow is spectacular!
Once again, the show is a little too long for Alec, but he is a trooper, we'll reward him later for being such a good kid! It's pretty late and it's been a long day. Back to the hotel restaurant. A very pretty place, I didn't pay much attention to the prices, I just figured they would be high. I got my credit card statement and the total was $35.34 (not as much as I thought it would be) The food was very good, fantastic french fries, I'm usually not that impressed over french fries :), Uxmal by Day Can you say excited? We're all hoping to be able to climb the huge temple we saw last night, but, we're disappointed, we can only look at it....but it is awesome! We did go through a small tunnel of this structure on the back side, well not all the way through, we only got as far as when the bats chased us out! I haven't see Kelsey move that fast in a long time!
Uxmal is such an impressive place, I'm so glad we made the trip. Part of the reason we did it was because , Kelsey, our 12 year old is studying the Mayan civilization in school. The class was divided up into cities and she was a resident of Uxmal :) So, she was very excited to take these pics back to school. The Governor's House
The view from the Governor's house
There is one very tall pyramid that you can climb, so of course we did :) See the tiny dot in the upper left hand corner? Yup, that's Alec, ran right up those steps!
The view from up here is spectacular
At the top there was a small opening, we could hear bees buzzing so we thought we should be careful, then I see a sign and point it out to Perry. It says "caution Bees Africana" African Bees? Aren't those the "killer bees?" Yikes let's get out of here! Down we go! We don't tell the kids. I don't want them to panic and try to run down the steep steps.
This was interesting, we sort of eavesdropped on a private tour, and the guide pointed out these handprints way up high on a wall.
The hand prints were inside this doorway, almost to the ceiling
All of the history here and Chichen-Itza is so amazing. The feeling that comes over you walking through this fabulous city is overwhelming. Can you tell I really dig this stuff? :)
We explored Uxmal for several hours, until we were overcome by hunger, but I had to stop at a few shops on my way out. Wasn't too hungry to shop! The prices were very reasonable, which surprises me for such a touristy place. We bought Uxmal t-shirts for the kids, a couple of doo-dads and a bow and arrow for Alec. (his reward) This was a hand-made child sized set with actual stone arrowheads,.. pretty cool :) But, he cannot shoot those sharp arrows without adult supervision, those things looked like they could do some damage. After shopping we go over to the hotel restaurant, but Alec wants to swim first, oh no the water is soooo cold. But, he has been so good doing alot of stuff that is pretty boring for a little kid, so Perry takes him to the pool. Luckliy, he doesn't last long in there... Lunch is as good as dinner last night. It was so cool you could sit in the restaurant and see these huge ruins. Alec couldn't stand not playing with his bow and arrow so we let him shoot it into the grass beside the restaurant. To get him to eat, Perry put a roll on his arrow and he ate it from there. Simple pleasures for a 7 year old boy :) After we eat we check out of our pretty room, we're heading off to Playa del Carmen. Of course the road trip back didn't seem as long or scarey as when we came. As we get closer to Merida, Perry & I decide it's silly to be so close to this city and not go take a look, so when it came to our turn off, we turned towards Merida. What a big city and so many people! We didn't spend much time here, next trip we will. I kind of wanted to get to Playa before dark. Well we decide to take the free road instead of the toll, and there are many little villages along the way with lots of topes! By the time we get to Valladolid it's getting dark. We decide to spend the night in Valldolid, we got a room at Maria de la Luz for 300 pesos, they even have an indoor parking area! The room we get is small, but O.K. , it's a $30.00 a night room! By this time, we need to eat again. I want to try some unique Valladolid restaurant but the kids have spotted a Dominos pizza and it's 2x1 night :( So a Hawaiian for Perry & I and " just cheese" for the kids.) We walk around town a little more and see a wedding going on in the church, it is beautiful. I didn't take a picture I thought it was too personal. Long day of running around the ruins so we hit the sack! The next morning we go in search of breakfast and find this place, I thought it would be O.K :) This is a couple blocks from the square
Turned out to be a nice little find, the restaurant overlooked the courtyard and pool of a small hotel.I didn't see a room but from the outside it looked like a decent little place.
We walked around town some more, just taking it all in, the sidewalks are very narrow. This is definitely a place I'd like to get to know better and spend some more time in someday. Each neighborhood has a church and a zocalo
The journey continues! Back in the car we're headed for the coast, but decide to take one detour to see cenote ik-kil. Once again, this place is so much prettier than the photo!
On the road again, where will will end up next? Stay tuned for more Mayan Adventures! |
