Isla Mujeres Golf Cart Rental

Don’t get lost!

There has been some recent confusion on the rules about golf cart rental and the delivery of the carts to your hotel or vacation rental.

To clear things up, I contacted the director of tourism on Isla Mujeres, Eyder Hoth. This is the information he sent me today, October 16, 2012

1. If a golf cart is rented and paid for at a hotel front desk, then the rental company should  send an employee to pick-up the client and take him to the rental company location and there make him sign the contract and give him the cart.

2. If a golf cart is offered on the street by a “comisionista” (registered street promotor) they should escort the client to the rental company and sign the contract and pick up your cart there. It is forbidden and not recommended to take the Golf Cart directly on the street by the comisionista since he won’t be able to have the rental contract with him so the insurance policy won’t apply, besides this is also forbbiden by the Tourismo Office of Isla Mujeres.

3. If you reserve and pay for a cart on the internet, you should take your receipt to the rental office to pick up your cart and sign the contracts, or a representative from the rental company could meet you at the ferry and take you to the rental company.

Delivery of a golf cart to your hotel or vacation  rental is not permitted by the office of Tourism and SINTRA (State Department for Infraestructure and Transports). If a golf cart company is caught delivering carts to clients, they will be fined.

There are many golf cart rentals and all close to the ferry, you can reserve online and be met at the ferry to go back to the rental office to sign the contract, or take a taxi or walk to the office.

If you are traveling as a couple or a group, have one person go get the cart so you you won’t have to haul your luggage to the rental office. Make your way a little to the north to one of the great coctelerias and have a snack and a drink while you wait for the cart .

If you’re the one who got to have drinks while the other guy had to go get the cart, you owe him one!  🙂

  1. Yes, it really isn’t that much of an inconvenience to get your own cart. I can see where it might be a nice service for those staying on the south end of the island. Unfortunately, at least right now, it’s against the rules.

  2. How could you forget! 🙂

  3. Hi Gloria,
It’s very possible that the hotel has a special arrangement, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

  4. A little unsettling to hear as I have reservations in Isla in Febuary and the hotel has indeed advised that they have made arrangements for a gold cart to be delivered to us.

On a more important note….I am VERY DISTURBED to hear of the recent poisionings of family dogs by their owners. If I come down there and see one on the side of the road, my vacation will be ruined, and it will be my last trip to Isla. I have been vacationing there since 2001 and even brought a puppy home with me to the States to keep it from harm.

  5. I like the photo…wait, I remember that day ,LOL!

  6. Thanks for clearing that up. I see several sites offering delivery service. We stayed on Playa Norte and simply walked from our hotel down to the rental place (only a couple of blocks away). After dropping the cart back at their office, they gave me a ride to the ferry. Very easy.
